The Client Advisor can be installed and run in any of three configurable modes of operation: Silent Monitoring: used to gather statistics for a print study, possibly in advance of purchasing the full Preo V3 system. In this mode, the Preo V3 Client is invisible to the end-user. Print Advisor: used to educate end-users on how to optimize their printing resources. Preo augments the standard application print dialog with advice and options driven by business rules that the organization can configure to implement their print cost reduction policy. Preo’s advisory user interface is designed to function without requiring custom integration into applications. Print Control: used to enforce security, cost-saving or charge-out policies. Preo’s advisory user interface always appears; printing may be restricted by quota; documents may require clearance before being printed. Control mode is implemented using the same business-rule mechanism as Advisory mode, but the rules require compliance; the user has no option to ignore the Wizard. The Server aggregates all print data collected by Clients for reporting and uploading into other systems. The Server also distributes software updates, costing data and messaging (such as print quota reports) to the Clients. The Server provides a web-accessible Print Management Portal for IT staff to manage the system and to view reports. The Server can be networked to other Preo V3 Servers to share information such as baseline costing data from the Preo best practices data warehouse. The Client Advisor runs independently of the Server, communicating with it only to upload print job records and archived files or to download updates to costing and routing data. Operating independently prevents massive failures and enables the Client to function even when disconnected. For example, when the user is traveling or is in a part of the world where network connectivity is spotty.
